Generation WE is more
than just a demographic
metric; it is a way of
thinking, a vision of the
future, and a desire to
change the world. It is a
generation that is not
afraid to face challenges
and is willing to take
responsibility for
its actions. They are
experienced internet users
who can navigate it with
ease and grace.
Our generation expands
its horizons by utilizing
virtual reality,
social media, and
e-learning. Thanks to
these tools, they can communicate
with the rest of the world regardless
of distance or
geographical barriers.
They can find
friends from all over the
world, participate in
discussions, and share their
experiences globally. Their ability
to express their
thoughts and opinions
online allows them to
influence and change
public opinion on
critical issues.
Despite global
contacts, our
generation longs for
deep and
genuine relationships.
They have the opportunity
to apply their
education,
experience, and values
even outside the virtual
world.
This generation is a
successor to the
past and, at the same time, a
predecessor of the
future, as it
combines traditions and
changes to create
new forms of culture and
community.
GenerationWE is
dedicated to helping this
truly unique
generation. Our
organization
provides these
young people with a
safe environment
where they can communicate,
learn, and grow together. We believe that
Generation WE has
huge potential to
positively influence the
world. Their ability to
innovate,
collaborate, and
express themselves paves
the way for a
more connected and
better future.
Generation WE is more

Ukrainian
students who
came to Slovakia
for education and
better
opportunities
face several
challenges. One of the
most significant is the
language barrier,
which affects
not only their
educational process
but also their daily
life and ability to
integrate into
society.
Our survey
results showed
that up to 65%
of respondents
consider the language
barrier to be their
biggest problem.
Slovak is a new
language for
most Ukrainian
students, which they must
master in a short
time to
successfully study and
communicate.
Language problems
manifest in
several
areas:
● Lack of
language skills
makes it difficult
for them to understand
lectures, read
professional texts, and
write academic
papers.
● Students often
face difficulties in
handling
administrative
matters,
visiting shops,
doctors, or
communicating with
local residents.
● The language barrier
limits their
ability to form
relationships with
Slovak
classmates and
engage in
community activities.
Systematic and
targeted support is
necessary to
overcome the language
barrier,
enabling students
to master Slovak
faster and increasing
their self-confidence in
communication.
Here are specific
measures that
can help:
1. Organizing
Slovak language courses
tailored to the
needs of
Ukrainian
students, focusing on
practical
communication and
specific
vocabulary needed
for studies
and daily life.
2. Short-term
language workshops
focused on
specific situations,
such as visits to
offices, conversations with
doctors, or
job interviews,
can significantly facilitate
student integration.
3. Informal
meetings where
students can
practice
Slovak in a
friendly
environment with
volunteers or
local residents
will support their
confidence and
language skills.
4. Using
mobile applications
and online
Slovak courses can be
a flexible way for
students to
improve their
language abilities.
Overcoming the language
barrier helps
Ukrainian
students not only in
their studies but also in
building relationships with
Slovak
classmates and the
community.
Better language
proficiency increases their
chances of obtaining
job
opportunities and
long-term integration.
For Slovak
society,
supporting these
students means an investment
in qualified and
motivated young
people who can
contribute to its
development. Support in the
field of language
education is
key to the success of
Ukrainian
students in
Slovakia.
Through
language courses,
workshops, and
conversation clubs,
we can create
an environment where
students feel
accepted and motivated.
Language will no longer
be a barrier, but a bridge
to their personal and
professional
growth.
Arriving in a new country is challenging for any student. Ukrainian students who came to Slovakia for education and better opportunities face not only language challenges but also the process of adaptation to a new cultural and social environment. This process is essential for their successful studies, as well as for personal and professional development.
The survey conducted as part of the Generation WE project showed that adaptation to the Slovak environment is one of the biggest challenges Ukrainian students encounter.
Main challenges in adaptation:
1. Students must get used to new customs, values, and ways of communication. Differences can cause misunderstandings and a sense of alienation.
2. Many students arrive in Slovakia without family or acquaintances and have trouble making new friends. They feel lonely and find it difficult to engage in community life.
3. Adaptation is also complicated by complex administrative procedures, such as residence permits or health insurance, which can be demanding for foreign students.
4. Slovak educational institutions may have different requirements and teaching methods compared to Ukrainian schools, which can cause stress and the need for rapid adjustment.
There are several effective ways students can overcome adaptation challenges and engage in the new environment:
1. Educational institutions should offer programs aimed at orienting students in the new environment. These programs could include campus tours, seminars on cultural differences, and practical advice on handling administrative processes.
2. Organizing social events, such as cultural evenings, sports activities, or workshops focused on sharing experiences, helps students meet new people and build social ties.
3. Involving students in local volunteer activities or projects where they can collaborate with local residents increases their sense of acceptance and supports active integration.
4. Cooperation with local students through mentoring helps Ukrainian students better understand local customs, rules, and study requirements.
Successful adaptation to the Slovak environment is important not only for the students themselves but also for local communities.
When students feel accepted and integrated, they have greater motivation to succeed in their studies and later contribute to the development of society, whether in Slovakia or in their home country.
Adaptation programs, social events, and community activities are therefore key tools to support students in this process.
Creating opportunities for their integration helps not only them but also the entire society, which is enriched by new cultural perspectives and motivated young people.
A survey conducted in the Košice and Prešov regions brought important findings about the needs and challenges of Ukrainian students studying at Slovak schools. This survey provided valuable data that helps us better understand what students need to fully utilize their potential and succeed in the new environment.
Key needs of Ukrainian students:
1. The biggest problem reported by respondents is the language barrier. Knowledge of Slovak is key to successful study, handling administrative matters, and integration into society. They need access to language courses, conversation clubs, and practical workshops focused on managing everyday situations.
2. More than half of the students stated that financial difficulties complicate their lives. High costs for housing, food, and studies are a heavy burden for many. Students need scholarships, affordable housing, and flexible employment opportunities.
3. The process of adaptation to a new cultural and social environment is among the significant challenges. Students need better orientation in both school and social environments through adaptation programs that introduce them to Slovak culture, rules, and customs.
4. Many students feel socially isolated and have difficulty forming new relationships. They need more opportunities to participate in community and social activities that would support their inclusion into Slovak society.
5. Complex and time-consuming administrative processes represent an obstacle for many foreign students. They need clear information and assistance with residence permits, health insurance, and other documents.
Recommendations for improving the situation:
● Providing systematic support in the field of language and orientation in Slovakia will help students manage their first steps in a new country.
● Organizing social and cultural events will support social ties and strengthen the sense of acceptance between Slovak and Ukrainian students.
● Providing financial support to students from low-income families will facilitate their studies and daily life.
● Easier access to information and assistance programs will facilitate the processing of necessary documents.
The survey showed that the needs and challenges of Ukrainian students are dynamic and evolve along with their experiences in Slovakia. Continued monitoring of their situation is therefore key to identifying new problems and effectively adapting measures.
Regular surveys will allow us to better understand their needs and improve support that helps them succeed in both academic and personal life.
Investing in the support of Ukrainian students is not only an act of solidarity but also a way to create a more inclusive and diverse society from which everyone will benefit.
